No More Squeezing By: A Dual-Cook Kitchen Transformation

For this avid cooking duo, their outdated 80s kitchen just wasn’t cutting it. The cramped L-shaped layout, limited counter space, and low lighting made cooking together a constant challenge. “It was a ‘one-chef-at-a-time’ kitchen,” they joked. “If one of us was at the counter, the other had to squeeze by like we were doing a dance routine.” They needed a space where they could both work comfortably, without stepping on each other’s toes.

The Transformation
To give each cook their own functional area, we reimagined the layout into a spacious U-shape with distinct zones. The new design includes a raised countertop for ergonomic prep work and a second sink, making side-by-side cooking possible. “We really wanted this to feel like a two-person kitchen,” said Hayley, the designer. “Our goal was to create distinct spaces so each person had their own work zone without feeling cramped.”

Bringing in the Light
With only a trickle of natural light, the kitchen originally felt dark and confined. We added a central skylight, paired with an LED strip for evening lighting, to brighten the space and make it feel open and airy all day. “The skylight completely transformed how the space feels—it’s like a whole new room,” the clients noted. Extra outlets were also installed, ensuring that every appliance has its own dedicated spot.

Storage & Style
Custom cabinetry with thoughtful features—a spice shelf, countertop recycling bin, and a full-depth pantry—keep everything organized and accessible. Opting for marble countertops added durability and timeless elegance, and inspired them to upgrade their windows for a cohesive finish. “We invested in the marble because it’s something we’ll appreciate every day,” they said. “It feels like a real statement piece that’s also practical.”

The Result
The kitchen is now a beautifully designed space for two, with each detail crafted to make cooking together a seamless, enjoyable experience. Once cramped and outdated, it’s now a functional, stylish hub that reflects both form and function—just what they dreamed of.
